Piercing Size Guide

Choosing the right size jewelry is key to comfort, healing, and style. Use this guide to help you (and your clients) find the perfect fit for every piercing.

Understanding Jewelry Measurements

Gauge (Thickness)

The gauge refers to how thick the post or bar is. The smaller the number, the thicker the jewelry.
Most piercing jewelry is measured in gauge (G) or millimeters (mm).

Gauge (G) Millimeter (mm) Common Piercings
20G 0.8 mm Nostril, standard lobe
18G 1.0 mm Nostril, lobe, cartilage
16G 1.2 mm Helix, tragus, rook, conch, daith
14G 1.6 mm Industrial, nipple, navel
12G 2.0 mm Larger gauge piercings

💡 Most EricaJewels clickers, studs, and chains are crafted in 16G and 18G titanium—perfect for most cartilage and lobe piercings.

Post Length (for studs)

The post length measures the distance between the front and back of the jewelry—the part that goes through the piercing.
Choosing the right length ensures a comfortable, secure fit.

Length (mm) Fit Common Piercings
5–6 mm Snug fit Helix, tragus, forward helix
7–8 mm Standard Lobe, cartilage
9–10 mm Roomier fit Fresh piercings or thicker tissue

💎 If unsure, start with a slightly longer post—especially for new piercings—to allow for swelling.

Inner Diameter (for hoops & clickers)

This measures the space inside the hoop or ring. The right diameter depends on the piercing’s location and anatomy.

Diameter (mm) Common Use
6 mm Tight fit, snug helix or tragus
8 mm Standard helix, conch, lobe
10 mm Looser fit or double-stacked look
12 mm+ Larger conch or orbital piercings

Tip: For a seamless look, the hoop should sit close to the ear without pressing on the skin.

Pro Tips

  • Always measure existing jewelry that fits well before ordering.
  • Consult a professional piercer if unsure about your size.
  • Remember: everyone’s anatomy is unique—fit may vary slightly between individuals.
